Kaizer Chiefs target and former Bafana star returns to South Africa?

Former Bafana Bafana midfield maestro Thulani Serero, who recently caught the eye of Kaizer Chiefs, is now on Richards Bay’s wish list.

Kaizer Chiefs target to return to South Africa?

SABC Sports gathered that 33-year-old Thulani Serero has been offered to Richards Bay. Serero left South Africa in 2011 to ply his trade in the Netherlands with Ajax and Vitesse, before a spell in the UAE with Al-Jazira and more recently Khor Fakkan. With Richards Bay securing a multi-million Rand sponsorship, a good offer could be made for the veteran star. The last of his 43 Bafana caps came in 2021.

Serero once played with Arsenal captain Odegaard

Thulani Serero eight years on the European club scene and all of it was in the Netherlands. It all started with Ajax Amsterdam in 2011 after a €2.5 million transfer from partner club Ajax Cape Town. He spent six years with the Dutch giants and made 121 appearances for the club, including 11 in the Champions League. His move to Vitesse Arnhem in 2017 saw him work effectively alongside current Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard. Serero played a withdrawn midfield role for Vitesse with Ødegaard for him as an 8. Ødegaard was 19 until December of that year. He is now captain of the Gunners at 25.

Chiefs were interested last year

In October 2023, Soccer Laduma claimed that former Ajax midfielder Serero was being monitored by both Kaizer Chiefs and champions Sundowns.

“The interest has always been there. There have been enquiries from Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns before, and even now they know he will be a free agent,” a source said.

“I can tell you that both teams have been in contact with his agent and the player himself, but nothing has come out yet.

“They were waiting for the season to end and for Al Jazira to renew his contract, and since there is nothing yet, they want to try to bring him back home,” the source continued.

Does Serero still have something to offer at the highest level?
