A Kahawa West man has opened up about the chilling moment he narrowly escaped death after a building collapsed as he left his home.

A seven-storey building collapsed in Kahawa West yesterday, Sunday, October 20, in front of residents who filmed the horrific moment of the fall.

Speaking to Paxson TV, Newton, who lives next door to the ill-fated building, said he was closing his door when the building collapsed, causing part of his apartment to collapse.

He remembers the area suddenly being covered in darkness as the building collapsed, giving him a split second to run for his dear life.

“I closed the door when the rubble suddenly started falling on me. I ran to the corner to save my life, but I could barely see anything. Fortunately, I was able to escape safely,” he said.

Newton, who had dust all over his face, said he had to return to the fallen rubble to rescue a stranded neighbor.

“I went back and found him trapped, and I rescued him with the help of others. The collapsed building collapsed along with part of our building,” he said.

He said the building’s tenants had been asked to move days before the collapse, adding that some builders were present at the time of the incident.

Amateur video footage circulating online shows chaotic scenes as residents frantically urged people nearby to leave the building.

The structure collapsed moments later, with screams in the background as the structure gave way.
