Julian Alvarez: Atletico Madrid sign Manchester City striker for £81.5m

Atletico Madrid have completed the £81.5million signing of Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez on a six-year contract.

Diego Simeone’s Spanish side will pay an initial £64.4 million (€75 million) plus a further £17.1 million (€20 million) in potential add-ons for the Argentine striker.

The 24-year-old’s departure is a record fee for City, surpassing the £50million they received from Chelsea for Raheem Sterling in 2022.

In January 2022, they paid £14.1 million for Alvarez to Argentine club River Plate.

Alvarez said City, where he won six major trophies in his two years, will always have “a special place” in his heart.

“Today I say goodbye to this great club with great emotion,” he said.

“These have been two very special years. During that time I have grown and learned a lot – both as a player and as a person.”
