Christian McCaffrey will miss the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener against the New York Jets on Monday night with a calf injury, a news that likely caused confusion among the fantasy players who drafted him.

Should his injury persist, which players could you add to your roster via waivers this week?

The most obvious choice for desperate fantasy players is McCaffrey’s backup and natural handcuff: Mason.

Jordan Mason starts as RB for #49ers tonight. I hear he has the respect of the locker room, is a tough runner who is fast and can run inside and outside the tackles. Mason doesn’t bring a ton of experience, having rushed for just 464 yards and four touchdowns in two professional seasons. But San Francisco’s offense is the tide that lifts all boats, and if McCaffrey misses a second week, Mason will likely be the most valuable asset off waivers this week.

Alexander Mattison, RB, Las Vegas Raiders

Mattison didn’t see as many touches as his backfield counterpart, Zamir White (15-9 advantage for the latter), but he did a lot more with the looks he got. Mattison rushed just five times for 19 yards, but turned four receptions into 43 yards and a touchdown, good for 16.2 points in PPR leagues.

White, on the other hand, ran 13 times for 44 yards, caught two passes for two yards and lost a fumble.

Mattison remains a risky addition because volume favored White in Week 1, and he’s never really proven he can be a top option in Minnesota. But as long as he remains a consistent contributor in the passing game, he’ll be valuable in PPR leagues.

Tank Bigsby, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars

History would suggest that despite Sunday’s split, Etienne will remain the best option in Jacksonville. He had 267 carries last season compared to Bigsby’s 50, and on Sunday Bigsby held a 5-3 advantage in touches after Etienne’s fumble.

Still, Bigsby is a player worth including in the squad. If Etienne struggles to hold the rock, Bigsby could turn it into a real timeshare. He certainly made the most of his touches on Sunday.

Bucky Irving, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Irving remains a popular choice to replace Rachaad White this season, though the veteran outscored Irving 21-11 on Sunday and averaged 16.6 fantasy points in PPR leagues, compared to Irving’s 9.6.

Irving is probably more of a long-range play, though the fact that White only managed to post 31 yards on 15 carries did little to dispel the belief that he’s simply not an efficient runner. Irving, on the other hand, turned his nine carries into 62 yards. This remains a situation worth keeping a close eye on.

Jaleel McLaughlin, RB, Denver Broncos

McLaughlin had more touches than Javonte Williams in Week 1, by a 15-9 margin. However, he only converted his 10 carries into 27 yards and somehow managed just one yard on five receptions.

#Bronco’s Week 1 RB usage
– Javonte Williams: 52% snaps, 8 carries, 18 routes, 2 targets (27 yards)
– Jaleel McLaughlin: 35% snaps, 10 carries, 12 routes, 5 targets (28 yards)

This may seem like a real timeshare, but the Broncos will likely be playing from behind a lot of players this season. McLaughlin is a player who should be on your radar.
