Jordan Chiles’ Olympic bronze medal will not be reinstated

USA Gymnastics’ request to reinstate Jordan Chiles’ Olympic bronze medal was denied Monday, but the organization said it is not giving up yet.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has informed the organization that “its rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered when new, conclusive evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.

“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue all possible avenues and appeals, including those before the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure that Jordan receives a fair placement and is awarded a medal,” they concluded.

On Sunday, the organization announced that it had submitted additional, never-before-seen video evidence to CAS in defense of Chiles’ floor exercise. The “time-stamped video evidence” shows that head coach Cecile Landi “first announced her request to initiate an investigation at the examining table 47 seconds after the score,” well within the mandatory 60-second deadline.

Landi gave a second statement on the examining table 55 seconds after Chiles’ score was posted. Both examinations were submitted within the allotted 60-second time frame, USA Gymnastics said.

The sports tribunal body previously ruled that Landi’s investigation was filed four seconds too late.

“The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the court’s decision and therefore USAG did not have the opportunity to submit it earlier,” the gymnastics organization said in a statement Sunday.

Chiles was the last to compete in the individual floor competition on August 5 and earned a score of 13.666, placing her in fifth place behind Romania’s Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who each earned a score of 13.700. After reviewing Landi’s examination of the difficulty of Chiles’ routine, the judges gave her an adjusted score of 13.766.

The sports commission later recommended, after the medal ceremony and Biles and Chiles’ viral podium moment, that Romania’s Barbosu should be honored third, Maneca-Voinea fourth, and Chiles fifth. Ultimately, however, the decision was left to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

The Romanian Olympic Committee has requested that all three gymnasts be awarded a bronze medal.

Chiles will still leave Paris with a gold medal for her contribution to the team gold in the all-around competition.
