Johnson dismisses rumors that ‘little secret’ with Trump is ‘diabolical’

House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday laughed off rumors that his “little secret” with former President Donald Trump that Republicans will retain control of the House of Representatives next week is “diabolical” and that it was actually related to their efforts to improve voter turnout.

Trump teased during his rally at Madison Square Garden in New York on Sunday that he had a “little secret” with Johnson. But the former president said he would not tell voters what the secret was until after the 2024 election, but that it could have a “major impact” on maintaining control of the House of Representatives.

A Democratic lawmaker speculated that it was a “secret” that Trump and Johnson would try to overturn the outcome of the election if Trump loses next week.

“He really calls it our secret,” Johnson said at a meeting in Pennsylvania. “It’s not diabolical. It’s actually very good. It’s going to help us with attendance. All this boggles their minds. They just can’t – they can’t fathom Trump and Vance getting the support they’re getting across the country the way they do – from new demographics of people.

The speaker said he expects Republicans will see record support from Hispanic, Black and Jewish voters.

Johnson told The Hill that speculation that it was something more serious is “absolute, utter nonsense.” The Speaker of the House of Representatives has committed to certifying the results of the 2024 elections if they are “free and fair elections.”

“I am a lifelong constitutional law attorney. We are going to respect the law. We are going to follow the Constitution to the letter,” Johnson said. “I have proven that time and time again. So all this conjecture is actually hilarious to us, that people are apoplectic about this. It’s a – it’s one of our voting strategies. That’s what we’re talking about. And it’s almost an ironic thing.”

Johnson also pointed to “secrets” that Democrats appeared to have in the past, such as information about President Joe Biden’s health and the truth about first son Hunter Biden’s laptop.
