John McEnroe slams Novak Djokovic with bleak prediction about his Grand Slam future

John McEnroe thinks Novak Djokovic’s days of winning Grand Slams are finally over. The American tennis legend says he would be “surprised” if the 37-year-old added more Majors to his palmares.

This season, the Serbian tennis star has not won a Grand Slam title for the first time since 2017. But before 2024, he reached all four Major finals last season, won three titles and is now the all-time Grand Slam record holder with 24 victories.

Earlier this year, Djokovic suffered his first Australian Open defeat since 2018, losing in the semi-finals to Jannik Sinner at Melbourne Park. The Serb then saw his French Open run ended in the quarter-finals by an unfortunate injury – he reached the Wimbledon final, but lost in straight sets to Carlos Alcaraz – before ending his Slam year with a shock US Open third-round defeat to Alexei Popyrin.

With Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both having won two Majors this year and the former world number one having failed to win a single one, some are arguing that the 37-year-old is done.

McEnroe’s thoughts on Djokovic’s future Grand Slam chances

“It’s hard to say what we can expect from him next year. First of all, you never want to write him off, but this is certainly the first time you can ask the question whether his days of winning majors are over. He’s got his family and you mention the word motivation. How long can this guy stay motivated? I’m surprised he’s stayed motivated this long, actually,” McEnroe told Tennis365.

“Whether he wins majors again or not. He won three out of four last year and now we’re saying he might never win one again. I would be surprised if he won more majors because of his age. At some point, it starts to bother you.”

There were times in the past when the Serb was doubted and written off, but each time he came back and achieved more success on the biggest stage.

It remains to be seen whether Djokovic will regain his Grand Slam-winning form next year.
