John Egan weighs up Sheffield United’s future amid Premier League offers

John Egan missed almost the entire season due to injury.

Ireland defender John Egan says he will consider his future at Sheffield United when the time comes as two Premier League clubs are interested in his signature this summer.

The Corkman is now fit again after being sidelined since September with a foot injury, but will soon become a free agent and his contract at Bramall Lane expires this month.

With the Blades preparing for Championship football next season following relegation from the Premier League, two top clubs are interested in signing the 31-year-old centre-back for the coming season.

With Sheffield in talks over a new contract to keep Egan at the club, he insists his sole focus at the moment is staying sharp ahead of pre-season, but admitted he would like to sort out his future quickly would like to have.

“Where I am now is making sure I am fully fit for the preparation. Those conversations take place in the background, they go over my head,” said Egan on behalf of Pringles.

“Over the past few months I have focused on getting fully fit for the pre-season. I’m in a great place now. That was at the forefront of my mind: getting fully fit again.”

Asked about a possible move to the Premier League this summer, Egan said: “Most of these things are out of my hands. As a player I can only concentrate on getting my body up to speed.

“The conversations continue in the background and when the time comes, when an offer is made or a decision has to be made, everything is considered. My main goal now is to continue my training and work really hard. When the time comes for a decision to be made, a decision will be made.

“Ideally I would like to have something arranged quickly, but as I have said before, these conversations are taking place in the background and as a player all I can do now is ensure that I recover 100% from this injury and continue to work very hard on it to strive. getting myself in the best possible shape for the preparation for the season.”

Egan, who has made 36 appearances for Ireland since his debut in 2017, has not played at international level since the defeat to Holland in September after missing the last four matches due to injury.

He is in line to return for Boys in Green in September as the Nations League campaign gets underway with a home double-header against England and Greece.
