Jo Adell scores decisive run in ninth inning as Angels beat Mariners 3-1

SEATTLE — Jo Adell singled in the game-clinching run with two outs in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Monday night.

Adell’s single to center against reliever Trent Thornton (3-2) scored Brandon Drury. Center fielder Victor Robles’ throw to the plate went wide and bounced off catcher Cal Raleigh for an error, allowing Zach Neto to score from first base to make it a two-run game.

Adell now has a .429 batting average in his last seven games, with an on-base percentage of .556 and a slugging mark of .619, with nine hits and eight RBIs.

“Just taking it slow and getting into those situations and kind of having a less-is-more mentality really helped me get pitches and not miss them,” Adell said. “The home run is not always the answer, and I think that’s kind of the sum of it over the last 10 games or so.”

Mariners starter Bryce Miller threw seven scoreless innings and allowed three hits, but the Angels tied the score in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Ward, which followed a key double steal by Adell and Anthony Rendon.

“It was crucial,” Angels manager Ron Washington said. “We took advantage of an opportunity that presented itself there, and we stole the bag, … we just played the game pretty well tonight. It was a good game overall on both sides.”

Raleigh hit an RBI single in the first inning for Seattle off left-hander Tyler Anderson, who was nearly untouchable from then on, retiring the next 15 batters. He gave up three hits in 5 2/3 innings, walked one and struck out eight in his first start since July 12.

“Tonight was a pitching duel,” Washington said. “(Anderson) did a great job for us, kept us in the game. Their pitcher did a great job, kept them in the game.”

The Angels’ relievers combined to allow one hit in the final 3 1/3 innings. Luis García (5-1) worked the eighth inning, while Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth inning for his 19th save.

Mariners relievers Ryne Stanek and Thornton each allowed two walks. Stanek allowed one earned run, while Thornton allowed two runs, one of which was earned.

“There’s no way to sugarcoat it, I just gave them a game tonight,” manager Scott Servais said. “In the situation we’re in, every game is really important. You know, I’m so disappointed.”
