Jets vs. 49ers live updates: Aaron Rodgers returns to the field after Achilles injury, while Christian McCaffrey is out

For the second year in a row, the New York Jets will open their season on Monday Night Football. And while they’d love to start with a win over a Super Bowl contender — as they did last year by beating the Buffalo Bills — they’d rather do it with their future Hall of Fame quarterback making more than just four plays.

The Jets are in the Bay Area to take on the reigning NFC champion San Francisco 49ers and hope to finally begin the Aaron Rodgers era. After suffering a torn Achilles tendon in that first game last year, the Jets struggled with poor quarterback play all season and finished 7-10.

The 49ers had a very different season, with both Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey finishing in the top five in MVP voting and narrowly missing out on the Super Bowl. They lost in overtime to the Chiefs after an 11-6 campaign that saw San Francisco win the NFC West for the third time under Kyle Shanahan. San Francisco will begin the season without McCaffrey, who has been nursing a calf injury.
