After being placed on the trade block by the New York Jets following the acquisition of Davante Adams on Tuesday, veteran wide receiver Mike Williams will reportedly have to wait a while before he finds a new home.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that he “doesn’t expect a deal this week, but stay tuned.”

Williams signed a one-year contract with the Jets this offseason after spending the first seven seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, he got off to a slow start over the first six weeks and experienced chemistry issues with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Fowler added that while the Jets “seem comfortable moving on, I hear he is open to a trade and the team knows that.”

A torn ACL cost Williams 14 games into the 2023 season, so he is still working on his form. Although he played in all six games for New York, he was targeted only 17 times and recorded 10 catches for 145 yards with no touchdowns. His average of 14.5 yards per catch leads the team.

To make matters worse, the Jets’ losses to the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, amid their three-game losing streak, both ended with game-tying interceptions on passes thrown by Rodgers as he targeted Williams. Particularly against Buffalo last Monday night, Rodgers revealed after the game that Williams had run the wrong route, causing the signal caller to fire a subdued pass that didn’t reach the marker.

Acquiring Adams gives Rodgers his favorite receiver from his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, so the Jets certainly hope these mistakes don’t remain a theme going forward.

Where Adams is expected to make his team debut Sunday night football against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jets could opt to make Williams a healthy scratch until they find a trade partner for him.
