Jessica Pegula Shares ‘Humble’ Secret Behind Her Super Consistency

Jessica Pegula admits that she generally has a rather humble mentality when it comes to approaching matches. She always shows her full respect to every opponent and she believes that this is one of the main reasons for her consistency.

Since the start of 2022, world number 6 Pegula has been one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. And although the 30-year-old American has won “only” four titles in the past two and a half years, it should be emphasized that most of her tournaments in this period ended between the quarterfinals and the final.

Pegula was also 28 when she entered the top 10 for the first time in her career in June 2022. Since then, the American tennis player has not left the top 10 company once.

Pegula is competing in her first North American hardcourt swing tournament, reaching the final of the National Bank Open in Toronto, where she is the reigning champion.

Pegula what made her such a consistent player

“Yeah, I think I always approach every match like it’s going to be a really tough match. I like to stay up to date and watch a lot and look at scores and matchups and different things. I don’t think I take any match lightly. I think the depth is really good right now, so I know that every day, no matter how well you play or what the ranking is, someone can beat you on any given day,” Pegula explained after beating Diana Shnaider in the Toronto semifinals.

“I think I always have a bit of an underdog mentality, no matter who I play, whether it’s a high-ranked player or a low-ranked player, I think that maybe helps me not to be surprised in some games. Yeah, I think that maybe helps me a bit and why I can win a lot of games.”

In the Toronto final, Pegula will play against Amanda Anisimova.
