Jawchire expects improvement as Chipu takes on USA in World U-20 Rugby Trophy

Kenyan Under-20 rugby coach Simon Jawichre wants his team to be attacking and work on set pieces as they prepare for their final group match against the United States at the Under-20 Rugby World Cup in Scotland on Friday.

The team, also known as Chipu, were beaten 51-3 by the Netherlands in their second group match, dashing their hopes of a place in the knockout stages.

Kenya trailed 41-3 at half time, but improved slightly in the second half when they conceded two tries.

Kenya’s defence was weak, conceding eight tries. The attack was blunt, with the team only conceding three penalties against the Dutch 22.

Jawichre said with two days of training left they still have a lot of work to do if they want to compete with the North Americans.

“If we want to get our attack going and avoid mistakes in handling the ball, which is fundamental, we need to work on our accuracy. According to the statistics, we only had two line breaks, which is not good. However, I believe the boys can play better and score some tries,” Jawichre noted.

The Catholic University Monks coach said another area of concern will be the lineout, which had a 22 percent success rate.

“We won only three of the nine throws, with the winners stealing six throws in the one-sided duel. The line-out is a technical aspect of the game and involves three components: the thrower, the lifter and the jumper. During the game it didn’t work”

Jawichre said he is confident that his pupils will perform better in the final group match.

“We have investigated what went wrong and I expect a response from the team,” Jawichre said.

Chipu lost their opening match 25-7 to Uruguay a week ago and captain Andy Cole Omolo believes the stakes are still high.

“The boys will not go down without a fight and we will fight to the end. I believe we can do much better in the remaining match.”
