James Gunn says Joker isn’t the next TV star of the Batman Saga

The penguin is coming to a close this weekend, and people are wondering what’s next for Oz Cobb – and which villain in Batman’s rogues gallery will get his own show next. Matt Reeves has hinted that this could happen, and since this is an Epic Crime Saga, there are plenty more viable villains to build a series around.

Recently, rumors started circulating online that a potential TV candidate would be everyone’s favorite murder clown, the Joker. In Reeves’ The Batman, Barry Keoghan portrayed the Clown Prince in a smaller role that sometime later teased a very different new look and a possible collaboration with Paul Dano’s Riddler. The penguinis meant to be set up The Batman part II, and you could see how that same logic would apply no matter how long this sub-franchise continues. But according to DC Studios co-head James Gunn, such a Joker show isn’t in the cards.

“This is not true, sorry,” he said to a comment on Threads that linked him to the original rumor. He then said in a separate post: “Everyone asks me about this. No, there is absolutely no truth in this. A Joker series is not discussed and hasn’t even been discussed at this point. Sorry.” Since taking over DC Studios, Gunn has used social media to debunk rumors about potential projects, such as a video game set in The Batmans universe.

Whether or not Gunn is legit about Keoghan’s Joker having no spin-off potential, it’s unlikely Reeves doesn’t bail him out of the asylum at some point: Batman stories can’t help but introduce Joker into things involved, and it would be a blast to see Keoghan and Robert Pattinson outsmart each other for two hours.
