Jamaica is currently under a curfew from 6am to 6pm as the island braces for Hurricane Beryl, which has now been downgraded to a Category 4 storm.

Paula Lindo, a senior Newsday reporter visiting the island, spoke to Newsday around 1:50 p.m. on July 3.

“My brother-in-law works in a hotel and everyone is locked in and secured, except for a few tourists who have gone out to sea to surf,” Lindo said.

She said there had been “a few power outages” due to the high winds. Lindo, who lives on the west side of the island, said residents had not yet experienced high winds or heavy rain.

“It’s just a little drizzle,” she said.

Lindo said she was following local news reports that showed some parts of Jamaica experiencing severe storm surges, strong winds and rain. She said other areas only experienced strong winds.

“Roads and highways are blocked due to the effects of the hurricane,” she added.

According to Lindo, the streets were largely clear, but earlier in the day there were stallholders at the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston.

“It seems like everyone is just holding back and waiting.”
