Jamaica lacrosse aims for global impact and scholarships in Hong Kong

The President of the Jamaica Lacrosse Association (JLA), Calbert Hutchinson, has highlighted the significance of the upcoming World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China, as a crucial opportunity for local players to secure university scholarships.

Jamaica is preparing for its second appearance at the tournament, following a 21st-place finish in 2019. Hutchinson emphasized that the competition is an ideal stage for young Jamaican talent to catch the attention of university scouts.

“Every time we compete at a World Championship, we have a number of our local players taking up full or partial scholarships at various universities overseas,” Hutchinson said, underscoring the tournament’s potential to open doors for academic and athletic advancement.

Hutchinson also noted that the championship could significantly contribute to the growth of lacrosse in Jamaica. He is optimistic that a strong performance by the team will not only enhance the sport’s visibility but also attract sponsorship from corporate entities.

“Competing in these world events also helps with bringing awareness around the growth of the sport in Jamaica and can help with creating even more opportunities for sponsorships,” he explained.

Ranked 21st globally in their age group, Jamaica will compete against Hong Kong, England, Japan, and Ireland in the group stages. Among these opponents, England and Japan are in the world’s top five, while Hong Kong and Ireland hold the 12th and 19th spots, respectively.

Hutchinson revealed that the team would primarily consist of local players, as the JLA has chosen to transition more experienced overseas-based athletes to the senior teams.

“More than 90 percent of the team is local-based players. They will be able to benefit from this international experience while on their journey to the senior programme,” he said, noting the strategic decision to enhance the senior teams with seasoned players.

A remaining balance

The immediate focus for the JLA is fundraising to ensure the team’s participation. Hutchinson stated that a remaining balance of US$31,000 (approximately J$4.8 million) is needed to cover the costs.

“Right now, our main goal is to raise the balance of US$31,000 to make sure we are able to get to the championship and compete. The girls and the coaching staff are excited and equally working hard to get ready for this,” he added.

Jamaica’s first match is scheduled for August 15 against Hong Kong, with their final group stage game against Ireland set for August 19.
