Jack Del Rio will serve as senior advisor to Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell

MADISON – Last winter, Luke Fickell said he had his good friend Mike Vrabel, the former head coach of the Tennessee Titans, come to campus to help out the Wisconsin football team in some way during spring training.

That didn’t work out, but Fickell enlisted the help of a former NFL head coach.

Jack Del Rio, who was head coach at Oakland and Jacksonville, will join the UW staff as a senior advisor to the head coach. He will help with the offense and defense, in addition to assisting Fickell. The hiring was first reported by The Athletic and then confirmed by a UW spokesperson.

Del Rio has been the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders for the past four seasons.

As head coach, he played nine seasons at Jacksonville (2003-2011), where his teams went 68-71 and reached the playoffs twice.

He served as head coach of the Raiders from 2015 to 2017, leading them to the playoffs once and compiling a 25–23 record.

Del Rio played 11 seasons as a linebacker in the NFL with four teams. He made the Pro Bowl with Minnesota in 1994, his penultimate season.
