“It’s not like you literally have to be in shape for two weeks”

After several players announced their decision to skip the upcoming Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek has spoken out about why she remains committed to competing in the international event.
Top WTA stars including Emma Raducanu, Aryna Sabalenka and Ons Jabeur have stated they will not compete in the quadrennial event, due to the demanding physical toll of switching from clay to grass and back to clay. After Wimbledon, the Olympic Games will be held in Paris, on the clay courts of Roland Garros. However, Swiatek believes that the transition between surfaces should not be a problem.

Swiatek ready to compete despite quick turnaround

“I want to be successful wherever I play, you know? We don’t underestimate any tournament, especially a Grand Slam,” said the world number 1. “But I realize that I have not yet fully discovered my potential on grass. So I concentrate on the work. In general, the preparations will be no different because of the Olympic Games.

“We won’t think about (the Olympic Games) until after Wimbledon, because in tennis you don’t have to be in shape for literally two weeks. We prefer to be in top shape four or five times a year. Physically that’s not the case .” That is always possible, but we will prepare as best we can and we will see.”

Furthermore, the defending Roland Garros champion believes the transition would have been more difficult if the planes had been reversed.

“I think it would be more challenging if there was grass first, clay in the middle and then grass again,” the 23-year-old added. “Going back to clay won’t be a problem for me. When I come back to it after a whole year, two days are enough and I feel great on clay. This year I already played the Billie Jean King Cup on hard, I’m I immediately went to clay in Stuttgart and was able to play a very good tournament, so playing clay a second time will not be a problem.”
