ITIA – ITIA quarterly update

An introduction from Karen Moorhouse, CEO of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA)

The second quarter of 2024 was another productive period for ITIA, supporting our members’ events at every level, from International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour competitions to the Roland-Garros and Wimbledon Grand Slams.

Involvement in these competitions can vary, but our presence at Grand Slams often involves ensuring the smooth running of the most important events on the tennis calendar by providing experienced support, as well as taking the opportunity to connect with the tennis family.

It has been three years since ITIA became an independent entity and the organisation continues to evolve day by day. We are focused on serving our members and those involved in their events with an empathetic and approachable integrity body that protects the sport and its members from doping and corruption.

Last year we established our first set of values, which are the guiding principles for ITIA staff in how we engage with stakeholders in the tennis network and approach day-to-day business operations.

Building on these foundations, our senior executive team and board have spent the past few months outlining our strategy for the 2024-2027 period, including identifying strategic focus areas and a renewed vision for the ITIA. From the outset, preventing integrity breaches has been central to the ITIA’s approach. We know this requires hard work and collaboration from the entire tennis family, alongside a strong educational programme and an intelligence-led approach to risk factors.

Our strategy takes all of these aspects into account and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks.

Update on education and prevention

In the second quarter of 2024, the focus will continue to be on training young players so that the next generation of professionals gains a good understanding of integrity issues.

The ITIA has delivered sessions at a number of key events in the junior calendar, including Junior Roland-Garros and the build-up to Junior Wimbledon in Roehampton. We remain committed to working with stakeholders across the tennis family and have also delivered educational programmes for junior players at Tennis Europe events and the ITF Wheelchair World Team Cup in Antalya, Turkey.

Another key focus for the ITIA is our work with officials, whose input is vital to maintaining integrity at all levels of the tour. Engagements in the second quarter of 2024 include delivery at the White Badge Officiating School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the partnership with the regulated gambling industry continues. In April, our Director of Intelligence, Nick Iliffe, presented at the Gaming Labs International (GLI) Roundtable Summit with the International Betting Integrity Association.

The GLI Roundtable event was attended by more than 380 global gaming regulators, including representatives from North America, Latin America and Australia. Given the changing landscape of betting integrity in North America, the event provided a timely opportunity to provide an overview of the ITIA’s work to regulators, enhance existing relationships and develop new ones.

Note on competition warnings:

Every report made to the ITIA is recorded, assessed and acted upon as an indicator that something improper may have occurred. It is important to note that a report in itself is not evidence of match-fixing.

Unusual betting patterns can arise for many reasons, even outside of match-fixing. These include incorrect odds setting, deliberate betting, player fitness, fatigue or form, playing conditions and personal circumstances.

The number and distribution of warnings are reported quarterly. Caution should be exercised in drawing conclusions about corruption in the tennis pyramid, as there are far more matches at the bottom than at the top. A more complete analysis will be published in our annual report.

If a match alert analysis does indeed indicate corrupt activity, the ITIA will conduct a full, confidential investigation.

In addition, the ITIA takes into account information from various sources and encourages anyone with questions to contact the ITIA.

Tennis Anti-Doping Testing Program – Testing Figures Q2 2024

These numbers reflect the number of samples taken from players, not the number of tests (multiple samples, such as urine and blood, may be taken from players when they are tested). All tests conducted this quarter were unannounced.

The ITIA is responsible for the TADP for all member tennis events. Testing in Q2 2024 took place at events ranging from the ITF $15K level to the Grand Slams at Roland Garros, with in- and/or out-of-competition testing conducted in 42 different countries.
