Is it going to snow in Texas? See NOAA Winter Weather Forecast for 2024

play

Texans finally felt the chill of winter as a cold front swept across the United States yesterday, sending many parts of the state to their first freezing temperatures of the season — weeks later than the historical average.

This icy milestone coincides with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s projection of a warmer, drier winter for most of Texas, driven by strong La Niña conditions. The probability of La Niña developing by the end of the year has decreased to 57%, compared to 74% last month, but remains favorable.

However, this pattern is expected to be short-lived, with conditions returning to neutral in February.

When does winter start?

The winter season runs from December 21 to March 20.

NOAA winter weather forecast: Will it snow in Texas?

The National Weather Service is forecasting above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation for most of Texas through February, except the Northeast Panhandle, where average temperatures are expected.

Southern areas, stretching from Austin to the Rio Grande Valley, are most likely to experience unseasonably warm conditions, with a 50% to 60% chance of above-normal temperatures.

Although NOAA’s winter outlook does not provide details on snow or ice totals, focusing instead on precipitation totals, meteorologists suggest that the expected precipitation deficit reduces the chance of another historic winter storm like Texas in 2021.

However, snow is still possible.
