Insurers urged to embrace sports activities for healthy work environment and productivity – Malawi Nyasa Times

The Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) has called on insurance companies in the country to include sports activities in their programmes to create a healthy working environment and improve productivity.

This was stated by the institution’s Chairman, Reuben Kamanga Kawelele, last weekend in Blantyre during the Insurance Institute of Malawi 2024 annual sports festival.

Kawelele noted that the insurance sector has not been spared from the health-related disasters that have hit the country so far. Therefore, it is imperative for companies to consider incorporating sports activities into their programs to ensure a healthy working environment.

“It is a fact that the country is facing numerous health-related challenges, including mental health. Therefore, it is imperative that insurance companies consider pooling resources for health-related sectors such as sports,” he said.

According to Kawelele, his Phone Institute aims to promote a balanced lifestyle and create a sense of community among its members.

“We want to create a healthy working environment and a healthy life balance so that institutions can move forward in times of societal vulnerability,” he said.

The President further said that his institution had decided to organise a sports festival to enhance networking, physical and mental health and well-being and to share business opportunities with insurance companies among others.

The sports festival brought together insurance industry professionals with their family and friends.

The day offered a varied range of sports activities, suitable for both competitive athletes and recreational enthusiasts. Examples of these were football, netball, chess, tennis, cycling, darts, volleyball, checkers, gendaball, basketball, swimming, bawo and golf tournaments.

Participants could also enjoy various non-sporting activities, including live music performances by Zeze Kingstone and a number of food stalls, as well as a family zone.

One of the participants from the Malawi Medical Aid Society (Masm) orchestra Kamanga thanked the organizers of the sports festival, saying it helped him get to know other players in the insurance sector, besides keeping him physically fit.

During the activities, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) emerged as the winner after beating Nico Life Insurance in the netball category and in the relay event. General Alliance Insurance was the winner of the other sports activities of the day.
