Insurance salesman fulfills dream of elk hunting before death

“Just living the dream.”

These were among Eugene Earl Spoon’s last words to her daughter in a mailed card that Gina Heller received the same day she was informed that his remains were found in the rubble of the burned hotel where he stayed during a bucket list elk hunt. trip in Newfoundland, Canada.

According to a report from The Canadian Press, the avid hunter’s remains were recovered Oct. 23 after the Driftwood Inn in Deer Lake was destroyed by fire on Oct. 19.

Before Heller was informed of her missing father, he learned from Spoon that his dream came true after successfully hunting a Newfoundland moose. The call was placed the night before the fire.

Additionally, Spoon wrote on his card that arrived last week, “Just living the dream. Life is there to be experienced. I do that.”

Deer Lake Mayor Mike Goosney, meanwhile, said Spoon’s family had requested that the moose meat be donated to a local food bank or charity.

It was reported that Spoon, whose wife (Heller’s stepmother) died in December 2023, had two daughters, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
