In the podcast: Edward Enninful on the ’90s and Olympic athlete Gabby Thomas at NYFW

The nineties never going out of style—a fact Edward Enninful would know better than anyone. Between his modeling work, developing a friendship with Naomi Campbell, and his role as fashion director at iDEnninful was entangled in all things fashion at the time. He joins The passage to revisit some of his favorite moments from the decade ahead of the docuseries’ release In fashion: the 90swhich premieres on Hulu on September 13.

“We were coming out of the 80s, where everything was so lavish and glamorous, and we were all trying to find our way in this new decade,” Enninful told hosts Chloe Malle and Chioma Nnadi.

Enninful was first spotted on a train by a model scout at the age of 16, and by 18 he had become the world’s youngest fashion director. iD‘s history. There he worked with the figures and fashions that would help shape the way we dress today, including grunge- and hip-hop-inspired styles. He became an editor at Fashion Italia and went on to create his iconic Black Issue, featuring only black models and cultural figures. (It sold out immediately in the US and UK.) As he tells Malle and Nnadi, the issue “was needed at the time. It was necessary.”

But before we do all that, we kick off the episode with New York Fashion Week! Chloe tags along with Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas to the Tommy Hilfiger show and takes Chioma through the week’s most memorable shows. So if you want to hear about the best moments from Off-White, Alaïa, and Willy Chavarria, this episode is for you!
