‘I’m overwhelmed that people want to know my story’

Mark Henry focuses on giving back.

Longtime WWE star Henry just wrapped up a role as an on-screen announcer in AEW. He remains a valuable part of the Broken open team on SiriusXM, and he’s still just as compelling – but Henry’s most important, lasting contributions to date have come off-screen.

“I don’t want to take the Paul Heyman gimmick and say I’m an advocate, so I say I’m an explorer,” Henry said. “I’ve put at least 12 people in the position to become professional wrestlers.

“I love being a mentor. I’ve learned from my mentors. Why not pass that on? It’s my time to give back.”

Henry is the subject of tonight’s A&E Biography: WWE Legends special, which offers a glimpse into his journey from kid to professional wrestling superstar.

“I’m blown away that people want to know my story,” Henry said. “It means that all the work I put into it mattered. I’m very grateful for that.”

Despite being one of the most talented, decorated athletes to ever grace professional wrestling, Henry never took himself too seriously on screen. His most memorable storylines all share a common trait with Henry’s personality.

“The documentary will show it — I always wanted to be famous,” Henry said. “My whole life I always wanted to entertain. I was motivated and determined to do that.”

Since retiring from AEW earlier this spring, Henry has focused on his “remarkable” brand.

“I want to help wrestlers make money outside of wrestling,” Henry said. “I’m also really proud of my Strong program, where we teach kids how to be strong. I want them to know that they are beautiful in their own right.”

Henry isn’t done with professional wrestling just yet. The WWE Hall of Famer is now focusing on All Caribbean Wrestling, which he believes has endless potential.

“Our shows in the Bahamas are going to be amazing,” Henry said. “That’s going to be my vision of wrestling. Just sit tight, be careful — we’re coming.”
