Ikwechegh vs. Uber Driver: Let a fair investigative process take place – representatives tell Nigerians

The House of Representatives has asked Nigerians to allow a fair investigation by the Nigeria Police into the alleged attack by lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh on Uber driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

Spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, announced this in a statement on Monday.

DAILY POST reports that Ikwechegh was seen on video attacking Abuwatseya.

The lawmaker, representing Abia State, had threatened to make the Abuwatseya ‘disappear’.

In response to the incident and widespread outrage, police said they have arrested Ikwechegh and started an investigation.

Reacting to the development, the lawmakers said they were saddened by the development.

“The House of Representatives is monitoring media reports of an alleged incident involving Rep. Alex Ikwechegh (APGA, Abia).

“These reports, which have received significant media and public attention, detailed allegations of a physical confrontation with an electronic messaging driver, citizen Stephen Abuwatseya, and the use of threatening language.

“The 10th General Assembly, the House of Representatives, takes these allegations very seriously. As elected officials, we adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct and responsibility, both in our official activities and privately.

“Any behavior that does not meet these standards is a concern, and we strive to address such issues with the utmost seriousness.

“We are aware that the matter is now before the Nigeria Police, and we urge the public to allow the due process of investigation to take place. We welcome further public engagement on this topic, which can be shared via email at (email protected) or (email protected), even as we continue to monitor the situation,” the statement said.
