‘I hated them (Florida Panthers), so I guess I got a few penalties against them’: Maple Leafs participate in annual ‘Call Out Other Teams For Fun’ BarDown YouTube video

On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs participated in the fourth episode of BarDown’s popular YouTube series, “Call out other teams for fun.” Nine members of the Maple Leafs appeared in a YouTube video for the channel nearly a week ago, showing the players trying to identify their own target horn — and hilariously failing.

In the latest video, the BarDown team got answers to questions on a range of topics, from the team’s city of favorite restaurants to answers highlighting their main rivalry.

While New York and Chicago were the standout choices when asked about cities with great dining options, the Leafs largely agreed that the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens were the teams that topped the list of opponents they’d most like to face. to lose.

“These two teams (Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens). There’s a long tradition here in Toronto, and we had a really tough loss last spring against one team in particular,” said John Tavares, looking back on the 2023-24 postseason.

The players also had to guess which organization they had scored the most goals against. Those who had spent more time in Toronto were able to guess based on divisional matchups. Among those who answered correctly were Tavares (Carolina), Matthew Knies (Tampa and Pittsburgh), Max Domi (Edmonton), Auston Matthews (Montreal) and William Nylander (Montreal).

When asked if he had a particular target that was his favorite, Matthews said, “All of them,” to which Nylander humorously added, “16? That’s a lot to remember,” referring to his total goals against the Canadiens.

The sit-down also highlighted a player who was surprised by complimenting them after a game, with Knies mentioning that Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy praised him after their hard-fought series last spring.

“I met (Charlie) McAvoy, he said some nice things. It was a pretty tough battle against each other, so yeah, it was nice to hear that,” Knies said, recalling the club’s opening round against the Bruins.

Other nods of appreciation, discussing the most memorable compliments, were given to Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (to Marner and Domi), Henrik Lundqvist (to Joseph Woll), Carey Price (to Anthony Stolarz) and Mike Modano (to Tavares ) – all of whom received praise from the lineup of NHL stars.

As the group discussed which team they had racked up the most penalty minutes against, Knies made a witty comment when he discovered it was the Florida Panthers. “I hated them, so I think I got a few penalties against them,” he said. This is understandable considering Knies’ first taste of playoff hockey came in the 2022-2023 season, where he suffered a concussion after Sam Bennett checked him on the boards during the second round.

Knies also said he would “never let them know if it’s a good chirp,” referring to the trash talk between him and the Panthers.

Other topics to guess included which players they would like to trade jerseys with, the team with the best golfer, the goal horn they least like to hear (with the Columbus Blue Jackets taking that title), and which teams have the least intimidating fans to have.

One question, as highlighted by Knies, was about which team had the best ‘tjilper’ (trash talker) in the league. Matthews mentioned former teammate and close friend Michael Bunting.

“I played with this guy, so I’m going with Michael Bunting. There have been some good ones and some really bad ones. Last year I think he did it with Domi or something, and it was fun just sitting there and seeing how it all went down.

Marner also praised teammate and enforcer Ryan Reaves, saying: “I’ll give Ryan some love, he’s got some pretty good one-liners that he throws out.”

Collectively, the video featured a good mix of some strong, but honest answers and it will be interesting to see how both the individual and team rivalries unfold as the 2024-2025 season approaches.
