Hurricane Beryl strengthens to Category 5

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — In the tropics: We continue to monitor powerful Hurricane Beryl. Beryl is a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 165 mph. This is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic this early in the season. Beryl will move toward Jamaica over the next 24 to 36 hours. It will approach the southern end of the island. However, it should be weaker at that point, as it will be interacting with some wind shear. It should be downgraded to a Category 2 by late Wednesday. After that, Beryl is expected to move toward the Yucatan Peninsula, where it will eventually be downgraded to a tropical storm. Behind Beryl, there is another wave we are monitoring. This one is experiencing a lot of dry air, so the chance of it becoming a tropical cyclone or less has dropped to 30 percent.
