How to Make Caviar in Stardew Valley

Making caviar in Stardew Valley requires a few more steps than it seems. Crafting this artisanal good requires a specific type of fish and a preserving jar. Like other crafted goods in Stardew Valley, caviar is worth more than the product it’s made from, and it has other uses as well, such as being a popular gift. Caviar is also used in the Cinematic Bundle, which is unlocked after completing one of the main storylines.

How to make caviar

Caviar is made by placing sturgeon roe in a preserving jar. Although you can age any roe you obtain in a cannery, only sturgeon roe turns into caviar. There are two ways to obtain sturgeon roe, only one of which consistently produces caviar.

The first method is to put a sturgeon in a fishpond, where it will produce sturgeon roe semi-regularly. To build a fishpond, you need to bring 200 stones, 5 seaweed, 5 green algae and 5,000G to the carpenter, who will take three days to build the fishpond. After that, you need to catch a sturgeon, which are only available in summer and winter. Place the sturgeon in the pond.

The pond will start with just one sturgeon, and in order to reproduce, you will need to complete fishpond quests by bringing the requested items. The more sturgeons in the pond, the higher the chance of spawning each day.

The quests will appear every few days, once the maximum number of fish is present.

The assignments are:

• 1 sturgeon – 1 diamond
• 3 sturgeon – 1 jelly or 1 pickle or 2 maple syrup
• 5 sturgeons – 3 omni-geodes
• 7 sturgeons – 1 nautilus shell

If you find a treasure chest while catching a sturgeon, there is a good chance that it contains sturgeon roe. However, you need luck for this and you need to be lucky while catching a sturgeon. The chance that the treasure chest contains roe is small.

Place your sturgeon roe in a canning jar. Canning jars can be crafted at farm level 4 requiring 50 wood, 40 stone, and 8 coal. It takes just over four in-game days for sturgeon roe to mature into caviar.
