Houston’s father is charged with assault that killed his twin babies

A Houston man has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of his twin children, who authorities say suffered from abusive trauma and prolonged abuse.

A Harris County grand jury has indicted 21-year-old Fernando Vega on two counts of murdering his twins.

BACKGROUND: Disturbing details emerge about Houston twins’ death ruled a homicide, parents charged

Court documents show Vega allegedly struck the children with his hand and a blunt object and then applied violent acceleration and deceleration forces, causing fatal injuries.

What happened?

Both Vega and his wife and mother of the twins, Angelina Belinda Calderon, were initially charged with injury to a child-great bodily harm and are being held on $750,000 bonds. Vega’s murder charges were filed after the investigation revealed further evidence.

The children were found unconscious in their southeast Houston home last October. Emergency services arrived on scene, but both children were pronounced dead.

According to investigators, Vega and Calderon failed to provide necessary medical care, nutrition or proper supervision for the twins.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science performed autopsies on the babies, which revealed multiple signs of physical abuse, malnutrition and trauma.

One baby had an acute cerebral hemorrhage, while the other had hemorrhage in both the brain and spinal cord. These injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma and possibly vibration, which experts say occurred during multiple incidents.

The autopsy of Dr. Rico reports detailed bruises, fractures and abrasions on both babies, indicating prolonged abuse. He ruled the cause of death was homicide due to blunt force injuries.
