Houston Astros seek deal for top pitcher on MLB trade block

Like most teams this time of year, the Houston Astros are busy making phone calls ahead of MLB’s July 30 trade deadline. Unlike many who have fallen by the wayside, the ‘Stros are looking for players who can upgrade their roster. One particular area of need is addressing the pitching staff.

While the Astros have yet to finalize a deal, the good news is that Houston GM Dana Brown is actively involved in trade talks involving multiple starting pitchers, including one of the best arms on the trade market.

With limited time before the trade deadline, the Houston Astros will have to act quickly. However, they have already begun their work.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Astros are in talks with the Detroit Tigers about a trade for right-handed starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who is in the midst of one of his best seasons as a pro.

Flaherty, 28, will be a free agent at the end of the year, so it’s almost certain that Detroit will trade him. The question is whether another team will beat Houston to it. If so, they still have a contingency plan.

Morosi added that Chicago White Sox starter Erick Fedde, another right-hander, is another pitcher the Astros are considering trading in the coming days. Fedde is coming off the best season of his career and is under contract for one more season before becoming a free agent in 2026.

Like Flaherty, Fedde is a good option to trade. Perhaps even more so since the White Sox are nowhere near a contender this season. At 31, the White Sox would be wise to take advantage of the trade value now before risking a bad season in free agency next year, and Houston may offer the perfect opportunity to maximize assets.
