Since then, several videos have appeared on the internet and gone viral.

A local government official reported that two women had asked for sunbeds by the sea to have a better view than the women behind them, who had been lying on the beach for hours, Il Mattino reported.

When their request was denied, the women got into a fight, wrestling and pulling each other’s hair as the sunny sand suddenly looked more like a UFC octagon.

According to witnesses, the angry women then turned on the lifeguards who tried to escort them away.

The fight continued. One witness said it took “more than half an hour for calm to be restored.”

The fierce battle took place in the coastal town of Varcaturo, near Naples.

MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli criticised the fight as unthinkable and said the women needed to be “re-educated”.

A statement on Facebook said: “A fight between women in broad daylight, in front of families and children.”

“What for? A lounge chair on the coast. We exceeded all expectations.”

“Anyone who thinks they can do whatever they want and cause panic on a beach should not get away with it.

“We demand that these women be identified and brought to justice as soon as possible.”

The women, whose faces are not seen in the footage, continue to fight as beachgoers rush to the scene and try to stop the fight.

During the European summer, it is not uncommon for fights over sunbeds to break out, with tourists being filmed competing for the best spots in the resorts.

But violent physical confrontations are rare.

In Greece, drones were used to monitor solar farms full of tourists.

Angry residents even formed a protest group called the “Beach Towel Movement”, forcing authorities to intervene.
