Hollow Knight: Silksong will NOT be attending opening night, Geoff Keighley confirms

The annual Opening Night Live show will showcase a long list of games, but one particularly notable sequel will not be among them: Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Anticipation for Silksong is so high that the organizers of livestreams full of announcements, reveals and new trailers have to lower expectations by saying that Team Cherry’s game will not be released.

In recent years, shows like ONL have seen their chats flooded with requests for Hollow Knight: Silksong, perhaps to the detriment of games that do eventually make it out. So it makes sense that Geoff Keighley, who runs ONL and the annual Game Awards show, would want to send out a tweet to confirm Hollow Knight: Silksong’s absence. “Just to get this out of the way: no Silksong on Tuesdays at ONL,” Keighley said. “Team Cherry Games is still cooking.”

Hollow Knight fans were already left with an all-too-familiar feeling of dread after the E3-style summer 2024 video game showcases passed with no word on Silksong. Fans have admitted to being concerned about the game, which hasn’t received any official updates in over a year after developer Team Cherry delayed it until early 2023.

Silksong was announced on February 14, 2019 as a Hollow Knight expansion that became a full sequel focused on Hornet from the original game. “Almost from the beginning, Hornet’s adventure was intended to take place in a new land, but as we dove in, it quickly became too large and unique to remain a DLC as originally planned,” Team Cherry said at the time“We know this makes the wait a little longer, but we think the final, new world you’ll discover will be worth it.”

Hollow Knight: Silksong still has no release date, more than five years after it was announced.

The developer then remained silent for two years, only coming out to announce in 2021 it would have nothing to say about Silksong at E3 that yearAnother year passed and Silksong finally raised its head, as the 2022 Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase revealed that the game would be coming to Microsoft’s console and Game Pass on day one. Hopes were raised even higher when Xbox had said that everything shown at the event would be released within a yearObviously that didn’t happen.

The last time Team Cherry provided an update on Silksong was in February of this year, when the studio’s PR and marketing chief Matthew ‘Leth’ Griffin posted a brief note saying that the game was still “hard work in progress”.

No Hollow Knight: Silksong for Opening Night Live, then. But what WILL be at the show? Keighley’s confirmed ONL performances on Tuesday include:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
  • Monster Hunter Wilds
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
  • Little Nightmares 3
  • DRAGON BALL: Sparks! ZERO
  • Batman: Arkham Shadow
  • Dune Awakening
  • Marvel Rivals
  • Squid Game: Unleashed
  • New game from Tarsier Studios
  • Sid Meier’s CIVILIZATION 7
  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2
  • Lost Records: Bloom & Rage

According to Keighley, ONL will be two hours long and “will also feature lots of new game announcements, surprises, and special guests.” ONL kicks off on Tuesday, August 20 at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CEST.
