Heatwave over and chance of rain increases!

Changes are coming to the Texas weather with the departure of our upper level heat dome. The high pressure responsible for our scorching temperatures has moved north. In its wake, an upper level low will bring scattered showers and storms to the southeastern third of Texas today. On Tuesday, we will see isolated to scattered storms across the western third and eastern half of Texas. Isolated to scattered storms will become a daily occurrence beginning Thursday and will continue through the weekend across most of Texas. The heat wave is breaking up.

We won’t get widespread rain every day, and not everyone will get rain every day next week. More people than not will miss out on rain chances every day. However, add a few days with rain chances over the weekend, and there’s a better chance than not that most people will get at least a few drops of rain. The weather pattern this weekend into next week is favorable for above-average rain chances.

Is the warmest weather of 2024 behind us?

During the last days of August and the first week of September, temperatures on the American coast are above average. However, the plains and the Great Lakes can be stormier, which can temper temperatures.During the last days of August and the first week of September, temperatures on the American coast are above average. With the upper-level heat dome gone and at least some cloud cover increasing due to rain chances, we’ll see cooler afternoon temperatures. Compared to last week, when temperatures ranged from 100 to 114 degrees, we’re looking at the mid-80s to high 90s this week. A few people will still see occasional highs approaching 100 degrees this week. If you encounter a storm nearby, you’ll likely experience rain-cooled temperatures in the low 70s for a few hours. Temperatures look to drop into the high 80s and low 90s this weekend.

This week’s storms will produce dangerous cloud to ground lightning, gusts over 45 MPH, small hail, and heavy rain. Widespread severe weather (tornadoes, large hail, destructive winds) is not expected. I’m optimistic, but we may be past the warmest weather of 2024. Still, it will be warm as we head into September.
