Heather Watson makes winning start at Korea Open

Former British number one Heather Watson defeated Jia-Jing Lu in the opening round of the Korea Open.

Watson, who had survived two qualifying rounds, won 6-4 6-4 against China’s Lu.

The 32-year-old broke Lu to take the first set, before a second break in the second set resulted in a comfortable victory in Seoul.

It is only the third time that Watson, world number 183, has won a main draw this season.

Watson will face either Ukrainian fifth seed Marta Kostyuk or Dutch Arantxa Rus in the second round.
