Hartland’s Kate McIntyre, Pinckney’s CeCe Thorington named softball all-state

Hartland’s softball program regularly produces all-state players, but it’s not often someone with Kate McIntyre’s resume.

McIntyre is only the second Eagle in the past 17 seasons to be named to the Division 1 all-state first team more than once, joining pitcher Rachel Everett. Everett was named to the first team in 2018, 2019 and 2021 and missed out on a potential fourth all-state team when COVID shutdowns canceled the 2020 season.

In the early 2000s, outfielder Megan Kellepourey made the first team in 2000 and 2001 and outfielder Sydney Agnello did so in 2005 and 2006.

Also in Division 2, Pinckney senior outfielder CeCe Thorington repeats as a first-team all-stater.

McIntyre, who played first base, hit .427 with six home runs and 38 runs batted in. She scored 46 points and hit 13 doubles and three triples.

“First-team all-state two years in a row is hard in any sport, but very hard in softball, as competitive as it is and having such dominant players,” Hartland coach Taylor Wagner said. “She has proven herself as one of the best in the state over the past two years.”

McIntyre was at her best in clutch situations. Her two-run single in the top of the seventh inning gave Hartland a 3-2 lead in a 4-2 win over Lansing Waverly in the regional championship game. She went 4-for-7 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs in regional wins over Kalamazoo Central and Waverly.

“She always seems confused when it comes to nail-biting moments,” Wagner said. “If you ask a coach, that’s the one you want. She came through in the clutch. She learned early in her career that sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn’t. You just have to stay calm every time up there. She didn’t put too much pressure on herself and was able to pull through in such big situations.”

McIntyre, a four-year starter, will continue her career at Ave Maria University in Florida.

Thorington will go down as Pinckney’s best ever player.

The University of Michigan signee has been the Pirates’ starting center fielder and leadoff hitter since she arrived as a freshman.

“I live down the street from her,” Pinckney coach Eric Arnold said. “I’ve known her since she was a little girl. I knew what kind of player she was. I knew about her speed in the travel ball. That was probably the easiest decision I’ve ever made as a coach. The amount of ground she covers and the speed she has, it was a no-brainer.”

Thorington, also a state-qualifying track sprinter, set a state record with 130 consecutive steals. Her 187 career steals are the 10th most in state history, according to data filed with the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Her 224 career runs broke the Livingston County record of 202 set by Howell’s AJ Militello from 2016-19 and her 240 hits eclipsed the county record of 239 set by Hartland’s Madelin Skene from 2015-18.

Thorington led the county in each of the past two seasons, hitting .589 as a junior and .558 as a senior.

As a senior, she drove in 33 runs while hitting 11 doubles, nine triples and two home runs.

“She’s just a great athlete, a great person and a great student,” Arnold said. “She’s just the example for the other girls on the team in terms of work ethic and attitude and what it means to be a softball player.”

Junior outfielder Skylar Spisz and sophomore pitcher Olivia Forrest of Hartland received honorable mention honors in Division 1.
