Maple City’s Hannah Butzer played one of the best rounds in Unico Primo Junior Golf Tour history on Sunday at Willow Ridge Golf and Country Club in Blenheim.

Butzer celebrated an 11-stroke victory with a 4-under 68, which was just two shots shy of the all-time junior girls’ record. She is the reigning tour champion.

Olivia Tartaro of Essex took second with a 79. Cadance Beuckelare of Links of Kent and Savana Smith of Ridgetown both scored an 81 to tie for fourth place.

Kingsville’s Christian Morneau led the junior boys with a 68, two strokes ahead of Sutton Creek’s Ben Buchner.

Essex’s Austin Brancaccio won the university men’s division with a score of 71. University of Windsor teammates Vanessa Ardovini and Kennedy Fremlin tied for the university women’s title with both scores of 81.

Galaxy reaches Fourth Cup final

Blaine Sturdevant kept a clean sheet as the Chatham Galaxy defeated the Oakridge Blast 4-0 in the semi-final of the Western Ontario Soccer League Fourth Division Cup on Saturday.

Ethan Quinteros and Jack Grochmal scored from penalties in the first 10 minutes to make it 2-0 at halftime at the Taxandria Soccer Complex in Arkona.

Donavin Kitt and Austin Isaac scored in the second half.

The Galaxy will play the Fourth Cup final on Tuesday, August 6 in London against Sarnia FC or the Woodstock Stallions

Undefeated Eagles draw with Strathroy United

Lucie Maine scored in the 1-1 draw between Chatham Eagles and Strathroy United in the London and Area Women’s Soccer League at St. Clair College’s Chatham campus field on Friday.

Lily Allado’s cross into the penalty area put Maine on course for a 1-0 halftime lead. Strathroy equalized in the second half as the Eagles failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.

“Chatham threw everything at the Strathroy keeper — free kicks, corner kicks, box scrimmages, breakaways — but it was just one of those days where the Eagles couldn’t get the bounce they needed to get ahead,” coach John Foster said.

The Eagles (4-0-2) are second in the First Division and will visit number one Sarnia FC on Tuesday.

U18 Cougars win playoff opener

The Chatham-Kent Cougars defeated the Peterborough Wolverines 50-7 in the Ontario Summer Football League U18 AA consolation quarterfinals on Sunday at the Chatham-Kent Community Athletic Complex.

Caleb Roberts opened the scoring with an interception 120 yards down the left sideline.

The Cougars will host the York Lions for a consolation final on Sunday at 7 p.m.

In the U14 AA play-offs, the visiting Cougars lost 22-18 to the Toronto Jr. Argos in a consolation final on Saturday.

Field, Lewis wins at Buxton Speedway

CJ Field won the Late Models’ feature race and Mike Lewis won the Modifieds’ feature race on Saturday at Buxton Speedway.

Ryan Beaulieu (Mini Stocks), Steve Shaw (Thunder Stocks) and Evan Bonner (Mini Mods) also won a prize.

The same five classes are scheduled to race this Friday and Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m.

Warriner in top 10 on provincial track

Blenheim’s Sam Warriner finished fifth in the under-20 men’s high jump (1.82 metres) and seventh in the 110-metre hurdles (15.37 seconds) at the Athletics Ontario U20, Open and Para Athletics Championships last weekend in Toronto.

Chatham’s Emma Pegg was 15th in the women’s 800m. Chatham’s Ryan Holly was 16th in the under-20 men’s 400m.

They all represented the Windsor Legion athletics club.
