HanesBrands and FESA: A Decade of Youth Violence Prevention

A partnership between HanesBrands and Foundation Educating a Salvadoran (FESA) has served more than 2,500 students through two soccer academies near its facilities in San Juan Opico and Santiago Nonualco, El Salvador.

As part of an agreement with FESAWith the aim of preventing youth violence in socially vulnerable areas of the country, HanesBrands built its “Viviendo Verde” (Green for Good) sports complex at its textile and sock facility in San Juan Opico, El Salvador in 2014. Funded by its Green for the good program, the complex now consists of a high-quality football field, basketball courts and volleyball courts.

HanesBrands launched its global Green for Good program in 2010, a unique project that leverages savings from its recycling program efforts to fund critical community improvement projects.

“We know that by promoting sports we contribute to the formation of better citizens, who will be more committed to the principles of teamwork, solidarity and discipline, and who will adopt strong values ​​necessary to build a better El Salvador,” he said. This partnership creates opportunities where local schools lack sports infrastructure. For both football academies, FESA has provided all sports training support, including physical trainers, nutritionists and psychologists, to promote students’ resilience and values.

“This was the first time that FESA established a football school in these locations in collaboration with a textile company,” said Jorge Bahaia, President of FESA.

More than a dozen students from HanesBrands’ soccer schools have demonstrated strong athletic ability and are now playing in the national professional league, with five of them receiving school and college scholarships.

Mauricio Guzmán, a seventh grader at FESA’s high-performing school for athletes, said, “We are grateful to HanesBrands for giving us the opportunity to improve our athletic performance while we play, learn values ​​and help us achieve our dreams .”
