GTA 6 won’t be available on a subscription service from day one because Take-Two’s “decisions are rational,” says CEO

Strauss Zelnick, the chief executive of Take-Two Interactive, said the company is not tempted to offer its game through subscription services like Xbox Game Pass from day one because “our decisions are rational.”

Speaking to our sister site GamesIndustry.biz, Zelnick said that while he accepted that “offering a flagship title with a premium price on a subscription service, day and date, will drive consumers to that subscription service for at least a period of time,” he said “it will not impact (Take-Two’s) decisions (to not offer AAA games on subscription services from day one).”

Take-Two has “15 immersive core” games planned for 2026 and 2027 — GTA 6 is, of course, one of them — plus one indie game, five mobile games and three remasters. Zelnick says his company’s job is to “outperform the industry. The only way to do that is to have big hits. I think we have all the elements in place to do that.”

“There are modest tailwinds that are positive,” he concludes. “Our job is to outperform the industry, and the only way to do that is to generate big hits, and I think we have all the necessary elements to deliver that.”

Yesterday we reported that Zelnick asked if fans could give the new Borderlands film “a chance” because “a lot of people have been working really hard on it.”

Zelnick was asked about the less-than-stellar reviews during the film’s quarterly earnings call. He called the film’s “look and feel” “great,” but Zelnick told investors that the performance would have “no financial impact” on Take-Two or the Borderlands franchise itself.
