Greeley Stampede welcomes a new mascot from NOCO Humane – Greeley Tribune

Just like Batman had Robin, Greeley Stampede mascot Bucky needed a new friend and sidekick to spread the love at the Stampede this summer.

Last December, Bucky started looking for a new boyfriend at NOCO Humane, 3501 E. 71st St., Loveland, according to Stephanie Johansen, Stampede community coordinator. It wasn’t long before Bucky found and adopted a three-year-old cattle dog, Blue Heeler, whom he named Spud. The name pays tribute to the Stampede’s original name from 1922, The Greeley Spud Rodeo.

“He’s Bucky’s mischievous sidekick now,” Johansen said.

Bucky was busy with previous Stampede commitments, so he was unable to be interviewed for this story.

Bucky has been the only mascot for the Stampede, and Bucky told Johansen that it gets lonely there, she explained. So Bucky came up with the idea of going to NOCO Humane to find a friend who could help him spread all the fun and love during the Stampede.

Since December, Bucky and Spud have become best friends, Johansen said. From playing frisbee to running around Island Grove Park, the two have become inseparable. Recently, Bucky and Spud were at a parking lot party at a local grocery store, where Spud got a nice new bone.

The duo will meet and greet the community on June 30 during the Stampede for Family Funday Sunday, and they will also participate in the Stampede Independence Day Parade on the 4th of July.

“They are the very last ones to come by and wave and greet people (during the parade),” she said.

Spud is full of energy, but also cuddles and puppy kisses, Johansen said. Bucky has his hands full with his new friend, but he loves the company Spud brings. Speaking on Bucky’s behalf, Johansen said he’s happy to have Spud around and is ready to show his friend what the Stampede is all about.

“He’s excited to introduce him to the public and have everyone meet Spud and love him as much as Bucky loves him,” she said.
