Dear Governor Mike DeWine,

In the weeks since Donald Trump told the lies about Haitians eating pets in Springfield, you have come to the defense of those Haitians.

You’ve pointed out that it’s legal immigrants who have helped boost Springfield’s weak economy.

I suspect you did that because you felt both sympathy and loyalty toward the Haitians. I know you are a big supporter of a school in Haiti. It is commendable that you have joined the Springfield mayor and police in exposing the pet-eating lies that Trump and his running mate have continued to tell. It took courage to defy Trump.

Letter: DeWine’s hometown has been dragged through the mud by liars. He still puts the party first.

So why are you silent about an even bigger lie that Trump continues to tell?

There are more big lies

I’m referring to his lie that he won the 2020 presidential election.

That lie was not just a political stunt like the Haitian lie.

The lie of 2020 was an attack on election boards across the country. It was an attack on all states that controlled election results, sometimes involving numerous recounts. And it was an attack on all courts, including the Supreme Court, which found no evidence of the widespread fraud he falsely claimed occurred. In short, it was an attack on our democratic institutions.

Letter: Mike DeWine betrayed Ohioans with an endless devotion to liars. Shame on him.

Trump’s persistence in this lie has fueled distrust of an election system in which fraud was virtually non-existent.

Trump’s lies have consequences

Have you forgotten that his 2020 lie sparked the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol?

Whether Trump himself led the attack or not, that attack would not have happened if he had not lied about the election.

In January 2020, you condemned the attack. You said: “It was a direct attack on our Constitution and everything we hold dear.” You also said at the time: “Joe Biden has been elected President of the United States and will be sworn in in two weeks.”

So you didn’t believe Trump’s lie.

But now you’re supporting the man whose lie resulted in that “direct attack on the Constitution.”

And when you support the man, you support his lie. By doing so, you are casting your lot with the only president in the history of the United States who refused to accept the will of the people and follow the Constitution’s guidelines for the peaceful transfer of power.

The Democrats lied. I’d rather dance with the devil than vote for Biden.

You recently told an interviewer that you are a Republican and will vote for the Republican candidate for president. As a Republican, you are obviously loyal to your party. But you have also shown loyalty to the Springfield Haitians who have been wrongly vilified by Trump. You had the courage to break with your party’s candidate to defend the Haitians.

Do you have the courage to break with your party’s candidate to defend and preserve the Constitution?
