New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh is aiming to win a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a fitting tribute to the country and the game’s loyal followers. The much-awaited Paris Games begin on July 26 and the showpiece event will run until August 11.

Eight-time Olympic champions India won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics after 41 years, marking the golden days of sports in the country. In this edition of the event, the team led by Harmanpreet will be gunning for the coveted gold medal and nothing less.

Want to take the legacy to the next level: Harmanpreet

Harmanpreet said that the team is trying their best to take the history of Indian hockey and its legacy to the next level. “We are giving everything to uplift our history and legacy. Winning the gold will be a tribute to India and our seniors,” the ace drag flicker said in an exclusive segment on Jio Cinema’s ‘The Dreamers.’

The current captain’s predecessor, Manpreet Singh, under whose leadership India won the historic bronze in Tokyo, expressed similar sentiments.

“When I saw our flag on the right, I felt that next time we could strive harder to place it in the middle, with our national anthem. This marks the beginning of our renewed journey,” he said.

Meanwhile, veteran Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh emphasised the team’s relentless drive and collective spirit.

“Someone somewhere is training to beat you. That thought pushes me out of my comfort zone. Every time I train, I am driven by the desire not to disappoint the 1.4 billion people in our country. There was a time when Indian hockey depended on individual brilliance, but now we play as a cohesive unit and that transformation has been the key to our success on the international stage,” Sreejesh said.

Craig Fulton, the Indians’ head coach, also said that the team’s mentality and strategy allow them to go toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the world. Moreover, the Indians have not defeated any team.
