God of War Ragnarok Steam Reviews Struggle Due to Helldivers 2 Issue

It’s been a bumpy few months for Helldivers 2, as Arrowhead struggles to find the right mix of fairness and fun. For some players, the frequent changes to Helldivers 2’s strategies and arsenal are part of a welcome attempt to keep the game even. For others, Arrowhead is micromanaging, its regular updates and patches slowly diminishing the fun in the pursuit of an impossible idea of ”balance.” But for the most part, the shift in sentiment toward Helldivers 2 began back in May, when Arrowhead told PC players it would need to link their Steam accounts to the PlayStation Network. While that update never materialized, the God of War Ragnarok The Steam reviews are in and Sony Santa Monica’s game is also receiving criticism for the same issue.

The God of War Ragnarok Steam version arrived on Thursday, September 19th, and by some measures it’s been a huge success. At the time of writing, over 15,000 people are concurrently playing the latest GoW on Steam, down only slightly from a peak of 22,000 in the 24 hours. The reviews have been far from negative, too – 66% of all player comments so far have been positive, earning the action-adventure title a certified ‘mixed’ review on Valve’s store. Given God of War Ragnarok’s accolades elsewhere (it’s in the top 100 games of all time on Metacritic ), the reaction may seem muted.

Much of the criticism, however, has been directed at one particular issue: that God of War Ragnarok requires players, as was originally planned with Helldivers 2, to link their Steam accounts to a PSN account. In some cases, this may not be too difficult – if you already own and use a PlayStation, the process is quick. But for other players, they’ll need to create a PSN account from scratch.

“I knew creating a PSN account was necessary going into this and was willing to do so until I was confronted with the reality of it,” writes one Steam reviewer. “Ban all third-party logins to Steam,” writes another. “Steam should function entirely on having a Steam account and nothing else, especially not to play the game, which again, is single player.”

Ghost of Tsushima, another Sony-published game that was re-released on Steam earlier this year, also requires players to link their accounts to PSN. Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West and Marvel’s Spider-Man, however, do not.
