  • His team was promoted, but his goalkeeper could face a suspension

A goalkeeper is facing a heavy suspension after a barbaric act in the South Australia State League 2 final last weekend.

Cove FC goalkeeper Ryan Veitch was shown a red card in the 86th minute of the match after leveling an opponent in a stunning goal.

Cove FC were leading 3-0 against Modbury Vista and the minutes ticked away until the end when the tension began to rise.

That led to Modbury Vista’s Dimos Karagiannis being awarded a penalty, keeping his team in the game.

He wrong-footed Veitch and converted the penalty, bringing the score back to 3-1.

But as he ran towards the goal with his teammates to celebrate, the Cove FC goalkeeper jumped up and gave Karagiannis a hard shoulder blow, causing him to fall to the ground and grab his face.

Modbury Vista players ran onto the pitch to support their teammate, while Veitch was shown a red card and sent off for his action.

“He lost his clean sheet and he lost his head,” the commentator said.

He will now appear before the Football South Australia Competition Disciplinary Committee, where he is likely to miss a large portion of next season.

“He punched him right in the face man, his offseason is going to be extended a few games,” one follower posted.

‘Bro charged at the attacker with his shoulder, who looked shocked and was sent off,’ wrote another.

“Nowadays it’s 5 weeks,” added another.

Veitch’s mother Lesley posted a message congratulating the team and her son.

“Well done to everyone involved. It takes an army to run a club and you guys are doing a great job,” she said.

‘Congratulations to (Senior Coach) Steve (Kitchin), his coaching team and support staff on achieving this fantastic result.

‘Last but not least guys, what a great group of young men you are. You have worked so hard for this, enjoy it and be very proud of all you have achieved.

“I want my son Ryan Veitch to be proud of you, he loves you.”
