Gabby Agbonlahor questions Liverpool winger’s role

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor wonders where one of Liverpool’s star players would fit in.

The Reds had a relatively quiet summer transfer window, having signed just one outfield player.

Federico Chiesa was allowed to leave Juventus after being made surplus to requirements by Thiago Motta.

And Liverpool made a cheap deal for the Italy international, paying just £12.5million for the Euro 2020 winner.

While his salary is modest compared to other deals, it is commensurate with his injury history.

Gabby Agbonlahor unsure about Federico Chiesa

The 26-year-old has struggled in recent seasons. Chiesa has suffered a total of 19 injuries since his move to Turin (TM), and is in dire need of a trouble-free campaign, but Agbonlahor is still unsure how the Genoa-born winger will fit into Arne Slot’s starting line-up.

“I just look at the team and think: where does Chiesa come into the picture?” he told talkSPORT.

Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool last summer.

“It will take a lot, or an injury, for Chiesa to get into the team because Liverpool are flying. Diaz looks like the real deal on that left side.”

The talkSPORT pundit is right about Diaz. The Colombian has been in brilliant form this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in his first three games.

Reports suggested the South American would move to Barcelona in the summer, but the transfer never materialised and Liverpool fans will be relieved.

Mo Salah is Slot’s other key winger. The Egyptian, who plays on the right side of Liverpool’s attack, also shows no signs of slowing down. The former Roma man was hugely influential in the Reds’ 3-0 away win over Manchester United last weekend.

For Chiesa, it seems the Italian will have to wait until the lesser cup games get his chance. And when they do come, he will have to grab it with both hands, because it seems an impossible task to oust Diaz and Salah.
