KARACHI: Construction work for two new artificial turf pitches, one for futsal and one for hockey-7, has started at PSB National Sports Training and Coaching Centre in Karachi.

The two projects were proposed some time ago and now the implementation has started. Both are being developed on an empty plot next to the entrance of the coaching centre and the tartan track.

The futsal field will be red and the hockey-7 field will be blue. Both fields will be imported. The sources said that a few rooms would also be built to facilitate players. It was also learnt that both fields would be used for training and not for matches.

However, there is currently no plan to replace the decades-old tartan track in the centre. The 2024 National Games are scheduled to be held in Karachi later this year in the centre, but due to the dilapidated condition of the track, which is 38 years old, the athletics competition will be held at the tartan track at NED University. The other delayed projects include the installation of floodlights, increasing the seating capacity for spectators around the football stadium and the fitness centre.
