Furious fans criticise Socceroos after horror result leaves World Cup campaign in tatters: ‘Aussie men’s football in crisis’

  • Socceroos drew 0-0 against soccer kids Indonesia last night
  • Are fifth in their group after a slow start to the qualifying campaign
  • Many fans were quick to express their displeasure on social media

Frustrated fans have vented their anger at the Socceroos – and coach Graham Arnold – after a tame 0-0 draw with Indonesia damaged their chances of direct qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Australia missed a host of chances in the 90 minutes they played in Jakarta, leaving Arnold’s men with just one point from their opening two games.

It followed a shock 1-0 defeat to Bahrain on the Gold Coast last week.

The Socceroos, who are yet to win a single match, are currently fifth in Group C and need a top-two finish to qualify directly.

And supporters were quick to express their anger on the Socceroos’ official Facebook page.

“After these two performances I don’t think Australia will qualify for the World Cup,” one fan fumed.

Another posted: ‘Another deserved result. Absolutely basic plan A with no plan B.’

A third said: ‘Australian men’s football is in crisis. That was just a disgrace.’

A fourth said savagely: ‘Arnie was saved by a dancing wiggle (Andrew Redmayne) during the last qualifying campaign when he was almost gone. There is no tactical identity. Nothing has changed. It’s time to go.’

Arnold admitted that the tide must turn – and quickly.

That came after Saudi Arabia (four points) beat China 2-1 despite being reduced to ten men, while Japan (six points) defeated Bahrain 5-0.

“There are still eight games to be played and second place is currently four (points), so it’s not a disaster,” said Arnold.

‘How many chances did we create? It’s been a recurring theme for over a year now.

‘The boys are there (in the locker rooms) and they are dirty about the result.

‘I have to go home and think a lot.’

The Socceroos next play China in Adelaide on October 10 and Japan in Saitama five days later.
