Full UFC 302 Results: Islam Makhachev Retains Title With 5th Round Submission of Dustin Poirier

In perhaps the most dangerous match of his tenure as UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev lived up to his title as the promotion’s best pound-for-pound fighter.

The Russian defeated UFC veteran Dustin Poirier by fifth-round submission to defend his title in a fight that appeared to go against him in the later rounds. He spent much of the fight maintaining ground control but was stopped on several takedown events and was nursing a nasty cut on his forehead as the fifth round began.

The whole effort seemed to come easier in the first round, as Makhachev took Poirier down, took him down, turned his back on him, and spent the next four minutes looking for a choke or arm triangle. Poirier resisted all of those attempts and began to find his groove in the second round. Makhachev has proven nearly impossible to beat on the ground, but Poirier stopped him as often as necessary and landed a few big punches to keep the fight fairly even.

With the crowd at Newark’s Prudential Center firmly behind the American underdog, an upset seemed possible had Poirier won the fifth round. Makhachev snuffed out that threat with a D’Arce choke and was soon mobbed by his corner as Poirier lay on the ground, unconscious or close to it.

It was another great display of creativity and talent from Makhachev, who said he would like to challenge for the UFC welterweight title, currently held by Leon Edwards. Makhachev has now defended his title three times, the other two against former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

“It’s my dream. I want to fight for the second belt. I want to feel that energy again, because when you defend your belt, it’s not the same. I need a new one,” Makhachev said.

As for Poirier, the 35-year-old indicated that he is seriously considering retirement, though he said he is not 100 percent yet. This was his third attempt at the lightweight title, with the other two also resulting in submission losses to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was in Makhachev’s corner on Saturday, and Charles Oliveira.

“If I fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times,” Poirier said. “I don’t know. I have a little girl that I love, I need to see her. I think this could be it, honestly.”

Here’s how the entire UFC 302 card went down. It was a great night if you like your wins by decision, some with absolutely unfathomable decisions from the judges.
