Frostpunk 2 already solved the original’s biggest replayability problem with this toolkit

The original Frostpunk puts you in all sorts of moral quandaries, but replayability isn’t one of its strong points unless you take matters into your own hands and replay it with self-imposed restrictions. Thanks to official modding support, that’s about to change with Frostpunk 2.

The official modding tool was announced in a YouTube video on August 28. The tool, called Frostkit, comes with Frostpunk 2 already at launch on September 20. It will let you “create custom maps, populate them with custom models, and set your new cities – whether they’re ancient, cosmic, or differentiated from the original frosty-apocalypse setting in a thousand other ways – against custom scenarios,” 11 Bit Studios said in the announcement.

Modding support was one of the most requested features of the Frostpunk community for the 2018 original. Unfortunately, that didn’t materialize due to technical limitations, especially since the game was developed using an in-house engine. Now that the sequel is developed using Unreal Engine, that’s no longer the case.

The beta version of Frostkit that was released at the same time Frostpunk 2 will undergo a closed beta period in the meantime, involving select members of the modding community before its official release.

“With this tool you can build or modify practically anything in your game. Imagine creating your own custom maps, models or even scenarios,” said Szymon Jablonski, Technical Director of 11 bit studios. “All of this can lead to the creation of worlds where the only limit is your imagination.”

As we saw with people like Skyrim And MinecraftModding support paved the way for infinite replayability. Even within the city-builder genre, the original Cities Skylines flourished thanks to its robust modding support. Now all eyes are on the Frostpunk 2’s modding scene and whether it can carry the torch in the post-apocalyptic volcanic winter.

Frostpunk 2 will be released on September 20, after being delayed to “ensure the best possible experience at launch.”
