Frenkie de Jong refused to be sold to Man United during transfer period

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong refused to be sold to Man United or another club this summer, with the midfielder happy to remain with the La Liga side.

According to SPORT, the Catalan club was again prepared to part ways with the Dutch star this summer to raise funds, having received offers from several European clubs ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season.

However, De Jong refused to leave Barcelona and remains part of Hansi Flick’s squad for the current season.

The 27-year-old has been with Barcelona since his move from Ajax in 2019, in what was a major blow to the Spanish team at the time. However, the La Liga club have tried to move the player on several occasions to ease their financial problems.

Man United agreed a transfer fee of €85 million with Barcelona for De Jong in 2022, with Erik ten Hag making the former Ajax star his top target in his first transfer window at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been linked with the Dutch talent once again in recent weeks, as the midfielder was an alternative for the Premier League giants after they missed out on a deal for PSG star Manuel Ugarte. The Manchester club successfully completed that deal, meaning De Jong would remain at Barcelona for another season.

De Jong’s contract with Barcelona expires in 2026, meaning the Netherlands international could leave the Catalan club next summer.

It is a stance that Barcelona do not share, with the La Liga club having made it clear that they expect De Jong to play through the pain barrier.
