French football captain and legend Hugo Lloris has spoken out about racist chants against France during celebrations for the 2024 Copa America.

The legendary captain from France Hugo Lloris, has strongly condemned the racist chants sung by some Argentine players during the celebration of the victory in the Copa America 2024.

The French legend acknowledged the merits of the Argentine national team for his performances on the field in recent years, but also stressed that success comes with the responsibility to be a positive example to society.

Because of this incident, Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez got into trouble after a video surfaced on social media. The footage shows Fernandez and his Argentine teammates singing a chant aimed at the French national team. The slogan sparked outrage and widespread condemnation because of its racist and discriminatory content.

Hugo Lloris talks about the Argentine players’ singing

Speaking to the BBC channel, Lloris called the chants “racially offensive and discriminatory”and considered them as a “direct attack on the French people, especially French people of African descent and families”.

The French goalkeeper pointed out that although “It doesn’t matter if you are in a moment of euphoria because you have won an important trophy”victory demands “Even more responsibility when you are a winner”. Lloris said that “We are all against discrimination and racism,” and expressed his hope that the Argentine players “learn from this mistake.”

Lloris recognises Argentina’s talent

“They deserve a lot of recognition for what they have done on the pitch over the last four or five years, but that also becomes a responsibility, as they are the face of football in South America and the world at the moment,” Lloris concluded.

Lloris’ comments join those of other football figures who have condemned the racist chants of Argentine fans. FIFA has launched an investigation become involved in the incident and may impose sanctions on the Argentine Football Association.
